The clinic buying guide

Compare consultation imaging tools

Choose the consultation question first. Photographs document appearance, analysis tools add measurements and simulators create visualizations. Compare each output on its own terms and keep clinical interpretation with the provider.

The checklist below is our editorial purchasing advice. Linked vendor descriptions provide examples of the different approaches; they do not establish which tool fits your clinic.

01 · Identify what the output represents

Ask the vendor to label the original photograph, any measured value and any generated visualization. Have the provider explain how each will be used in the consultation. A simulation should not be treated as a patient result or an assurance of a treatment outcome.

  • Can staff distinguish original images from generated or edited output?
  • Which outputs support documentation, discussion or follow-up?
  • What limitations must the provider explain to the patient?

02 · Repeat the capture

Ask for the same capture twice and compare the conditions: lighting, position, device and operator. Then demonstrate a later-visit comparison. The clinic needs to understand which changes could come from capture conditions rather than the patient.

  • What hardware, room setup and staff training are required?
  • Can the team reproduce positioning and lighting across visits?
  • Are original images preserved when an analysis is repeated?

03 · Follow the image through the clinic

Use synthetic or appropriately authorized demonstration material. Ask where images are stored, how they are attached to patient records and who can view or export them. Have the clinic review consent and data-processing arrangements for its own use.

  • Is consultation consent separate from permission for marketing use?
  • Can staff export original images and associated documentation?
  • How are access, retention and deletion configured?

04 · Compare the complete device and software setup

Request an itemized quote for hardware, subscriptions, users, devices, training and support. Ask which modules are shown in the demo and whether they are included in the quoted license. Keep acquisition and follow-up photography requirements separate.

  • Check supported devices and whether they are included in the price.
  • Confirm the modules and image-storage limits.
  • Test the actual consultation workflow with the provider who will use it.
